Nairobi National Park

In the shadows of Nairobi, the City under the Sun is Nairobi National Park-globally, the sole National Park in a city. In 1946, Nairobi National Park was founded as the only National Park at the time.

The park is separated from the Nairobi Metropolitan area by an electric fence. It is only seven Kilometers from the City’s Central Business District. The park’s primary vegetation is the grassland Savannah, and therefore, there’s the Big Four is consisting of; Cape Buffalo, Leopards, Lions, and Rhinos. This means that Game drives provide a fantastic view of the wild animals.

Being in the City and limited to around 117 square kilometers, the park does not host any Elephants. Also, the scarce woodland forest does not allow the habitation of elephants.

Nairobi National Park has the best Rhino sanctuary countrywide. The climate of the park is always hot in the months of January-March & July-October with rains in the other months.

Nairobi National Park is found on an altitude of 1533 – 1760 M, and the coordinates to the park are 1.3616° S, 36.8452° E.

The park has three main access points; Main gate, East Gate, Langata gate. At the KWS headquarters is where the main entrance is.

Nairobi National Park Best Time to Visit

For Nairobi National Park, any season could be good to visit. Still, the dry season offers the best game viewing experience. These are the months between January- March & June – November.

The best time to slot game drives is during the mornings and the evenings. This is because the afternoon heat forces the animals to rest under shades, therefore not offering the best experience.

Other exciting places to visit around the park are; The Giraffe Center, Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and The Karen Blixen Museums.

Nairobi National Park Opening Time

Nairobi National Park is open from 06:00 am to 07:00 pm daily.

The park hosts the big four of lions, leopards, giraffes, and capped buffalos. In addition to this, there are over 80 other mammal species. The other animals include the big herbivores, namely; zebras, wildebeests, and the elands.

For bird lovers, the park has a collection of almost 450 bird species. Some of the birds found in the park around April are migratory from North Africa and Europe.

The park also has some predator birds. They include; The Secretary bird, Vultures, owls, eagles etc. These are a great sighting and even more spectacular if you see them preying; it’s a very rare spectacle.

The park is also occupied by over 500 unique trees and bushes. The trees provide shelter to not only the birds and other animals. Also, it is the primary source of food for herbivores. Also, for someone with a knack for photography, these trees and bushes create great backgrounds.
