Amboseli- the dusty place. The renowned Amboseli National Park was established in the year 1974. It is one of the top tier parks in the country managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. It covers around 400 square kilometers and is on an altitude of approximately 1150 meters above sea level.
Its surrounding is almost covered by the African Savannah with a fair distribution of acacia trees. There are plenty of swamps and grasslands supporting the ecosystem.
Depending on the traffic from the city, it is ideally a 4-hour drive to the Park. From Nairobi, the distance to Amboseli National Park is roughly 240 kilometers via the A104 and C103 through the Namanga exit to the Meshanani Gate—Main gate.
Amboseli has several entry points, and from Mombasa, the Park is accessible from the Kiimana Gate in Tsavo West. The Park is also accessible by air via the light aircraft Airstrip in the Park at The Empusel Gate.
Because of the low altitude, the weather in the area around is mainly hot with rains in April / May and November / December.
The temperature ranges between 33°C and 28°C during the day, making it a relatively warm area within and surrounding the Park.
Despite being warm, there are rains between April till June and also November and December. In between the two sets of months, it is usually dry.
Amboseli National Park is situated within Kajiado County on an area of around 392 square kilometers. It is found on the leeward side of Mount Kilimanjaro, and some would say at the foot of the mountain.

Between the two sets of wet months, January – March and June – October, is the best time to visit the Park. These dry months present an opportune time for game viewing and extensively experiencing the Park.
