The Ol Pejeta conservancy was formerly a beef ranch owned by Lord Delamere and later sold to Adnan Khashoggi and is currently being run by Fauna and Flora International.
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy was established as a chimpanzee sanctuary through a partnership between Jane Goodall and the Kenya Wildlife Service. It is currently the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees and also the only sanctuary that hosts all three rhino species: the Northern White Rhino, Southern White Rhino, and the Black Rhino.
Ol Pejeta is located in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, approximately 210 kilometers from Nairobi via the A2 road. The drive from Nairobi takes around 3 hours through scenic countryside towns.
For those coming from Nanyuki, the Rongai Gate serves as the main entrance. Visitors from Rumuruti can use the Serat Gate.
Daily flights also operate between Nairobi and Nanyuki, taking around 45 minutes. Tickets can be booked through local airlines.
Temperatures in Ol Pejeta average around 24°C (75°F) year-round, with annual rainfall ranging between 600 to 800 mm. Due to its location near the equator, the weather is generally warm and consistent throughout the year.
Ol Pejeta is located at 0.0043° S, 36.9637° E in Nanyuki, along the equator. It lies at an altitude of 1,800 meters and spans roughly 365 square kilometers. The conservancy is surrounded by grassland savannah and bushes, providing rich grazing grounds for herbivores.
The area is also close to the Aberdare Range and lies on the leeward side of Mount Kenya, offering beautiful scenery and biodiversity.
Visitors can choose to stay within or outside the conservancy:
The conservancy is open year-round, but the dry season offers the best game viewing experience. During this period, animals gather at water points, making them easier to spot.
An Ol Pejeta safari is a memorable experience. Safari packages usually include transport, guide services, and accommodation. These packages can be personalized based on your interests and preferred activities. Bookings can be arranged through authorized tour offices.
Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya where you can observe chimpanzees. It is also home to the world’s last remaining Northern White Rhinos – Najin and Fatu. After Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, passed away in 2018, the conservancy became globally significant in rhino conservation.
Other animals you can find at Ol Pejeta include:
Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, was born in 1973 and taken to the Czech Republic in 1975. He was later brought back to Kenya in 2009. Unfortunately, Sudan passed away in 2018 without successfully reproducing. His legacy continues at Ol Pejeta through his daughter Najin and granddaughter Fatu, the last two Northern White Rhinos on Earth.
Bird lovers will enjoy the variety at Ol Pejeta, with over 300 bird species recorded. Some notable species include:
