The grand Maasai Mara gets its name loosely translated as ‘The Spotted’ from the local Maasai language. In the year 1961, it was established as a wildlife sanctuary. It is part of the Serengeti Ecosystem, just South of it.
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is the epitome of the African jungle experience, renowned for hosting the Big Five and offering front-row seats to the dramatic Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti via the Mara River.
This spectacular migration typically occurs between July and October, depending on weather patterns.
Located in Narok County, southwest of Nairobi, the Maasai Mara is approximately 270 kilometers from the city. The drive from Nairobi takes about 5½ hours via the A104 road, then B3 through Naivasha to Narok town. From Narok, several routes lead to the reserve.
Alternatively, you can fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to one of the reserve’s airstrips. The flight takes roughly 45 minutes and can be booked through local airlines.
The Maasai Mara experiences warm days and chilly nights. Temperatures typically range between 13°C and 30°C. Early mornings can be cold, so packing warm clothing is advisable.
The dry seasons (January–March and July–November) are the best for safaris, while April, May, and parts of November experience heavier rains. Annual rainfall averages 1400 mm.
The reserve spans over 2,000 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 1,500 to 1,900 meters above sea level. Its coordinates are 1.3719° S, 34.9381° E.
