Samburu Game Reserve covers 165 square kilometers of almost unaltered nature in Samburu county. The establishment started out as a park that changed into a Game Reserve in 1985.
Samburu National Park is situated at an altitude ranging between 800 and 1200 meters above sea level, making it one of the most unique game parks/reserves in Kenya.
The park’s uniqueness stems from its distinctive animal species, including the Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, and the gerenuk.
Adding to its charm is Kamunyak, the lioness famous for adopting and protecting oryx babies from different mothers.
The reserve borders the Ewaso Nyiro River, which also separates it from Buffalo Springs Game Reserve and Shaba Game Reserve.
Samburu Game Reserve is about 350 kilometers from Nairobi, approximately a five to six-hour drive via the A2 road passing through Thika, Nyeri, Nanyuki, and Isiolo.
A 35-kilometer diversion on a murram road leads to Archer’s Post, where the main gate to the reserve is located. Other access points include Bridge Gate (near Buffalo Springs) and West Gate.
Daily flights from Nairobi to Samburu take about one hour.
Located in a semi-arid region with moderate altitude, Samburu is usually hot during the day, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C. Nights can be as cool as 20°C, sometimes accompanied by strong winds.
The wet months are April, May, November, and December, while the dry and hot seasons are from January to March and June to October.
The reserve lies in Samburu County, at coordinates 0.5775° N, 37.4916° E, covering around 165 square kilometers.
The Ewaso Nyiro River runs through the park, separating it from the neighboring Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
Most accommodation options are located close to the Ewaso Nyiro River, offering spectacular animal viewing opportunities.
Popular lodges include Larsen’s Tented Camp and Ashnil Samburu Camp, both providing luxurious experiences for visitors.
The dry season is ideal for visiting as animals congregate near water sources, creating excellent viewing opportunities. Predators also follow herbivores, increasing wildlife sightings.
The short rains in December also present a great time to visit, with lush landscapes and active wildlife.
The Ewaso Nyiro River offers particularly great views during the dry season, including crocodile sightings.
Safari packages are customizable to suit preferences such as cultural tours, group safaris, and honeymoon safaris. Packages typically include park fees, transportation, game drives, and accommodation.
The park hosts the majority of the Big Four and is notable for species unique to this reserve like the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, and Beisa Oryx.
Other wildlife includes cheetahs, crocodiles, baboons, and various gazelles.
With over 450 bird species, Samburu is a paradise for bird watchers. Notable birds include the Somali Ostrich, Grey-headed Kingfisher, and Marabou Stork.
