In 1960 Lake Nakuru National Park was established as a bird sanctuary because of the millions of flamingoes since the Lake is the primary source of food. After a few years, the park boundaries were extended and transformed into a National Park covering 188 square kilometers. The park now boasts of its rich wildlife, the high number of rhino, and more famous flamingoes.
Depending on how much rainfall is received and also the season, the size of the lake may vary. The average size of the lake is an area of 40 square kilometers.
The drive offers you a scenic view of the Great Rift Valley through various towns to Nakuru. Once at Nakuru, the main gate is 4 kilometers away. The park is also accessible from the Lanet Gate off the Nairobi–Nakuru road.
Via air, the park is accessible through the Naishi Airport, which operates daily flights. Therefore, you can book a flight from a local airline. However, most people prefer driving to enjoy the view of the Rift Valley.
Being one of the highest Rift Valley lakes, expect ever-changing weather from hot and humid to cold. Annually, the temperatures range between 29°C (hottest) and 16°C (coldest).
